The river has settled down and cleared up dramatically from last weekends highish water. The drop in river level has made schoolie stripers accessible throughout the cove with encouraging reports coming in since Sunday. With the reasonable forecasted air temperatures for the next week we should have stripers around in good numbers for at least a week. Shad fishing has slowed down with the lack of flow. Some hickory shad can still be found upstream in the faster water while any American shad being reported are being caught in the cove on the main seam. Some eater size white perch have been reported in the last few days as well.

Murky water has made fishing tough the last couple days. American and hickory shad along with stripers and perch are still active and in the area but have been tough to catch. The fishing should be great starting early next week; likely less than ideal over the weekend.

As expected, the recent pulse of water has reenergized the shad run. Fresh schools of American shad have entered the cove while the remaining hickory shad seem to be enjoying the new current and cooler water. Striped bass and perch are also more plentiful. The river is still gradually rising and there may be a couple days of murky water but it is exactly what we needed to extend fishing deep into May. With the reasonable temps for at least the next 7 days and increased flow we should have at least two more weeks of shad fishing. Striped bass fishing should last up to June. Plenty of catfish active as well.

A string of cool nights last week briefly tempered the great hickory shad bite but as it has warmed up the last couple days so has the bite. With low flows hickory shad have been spread out throughout the cove and up to Chain Bridge. It looks like a fresh school of American shad is finally showing up after at least 10 days with very few reported catches. The warm weather the next few days should trigger fresh schools of Americans to come upriver but at the same time will likely send schools of hickory shad out of the system. Schoolie stripers have finally started to become more active of the last couple days. Catches of white perch are being reported as well.

After four days of high and muddy water the Potomac has settled down enough for a good shad bite to start back up. Even in the murky and swift water today there were good reports of hickory shad. A couple cold nights dropped water temperature but once it starts to warm up the American shad bite will get strong. Still significant current the next few days but as the rivers calms and clears the fishing will improve dramatically. By Wednesday this week the shad fishing will be off the charts. Stripers and perch fishing will improve as well.

Significant rain high up in the watershed over the weekend caused the river to jump up over 6ft on the Little Falls gauge last night. The bulk of all fishing will be on pause until Friday at the earliest. There may be an opportunity to catch catfish or perch from the shoreline but the river will be too muddy and swift for any shad fishing. No boat rentals will be available until Saturday at the earliest.

The great shad bite has continued over the last few day. Warmer water has encouraged good numbers of American shad to start making their way to the cove to prepare to spawn. Hickory shad fishing has been great all week and it’s hard to imagine it getting any better. With the reasonable weather forecasted and just enough rain to keep the river flow up we should be in-store for a prolonged peak of hickory shad. American shad numbers will continue to increase. The consistent water temperatures seems to have increased the overall biomass in the river. Perch, striped bass, and catfish have all become more active in the last week.

A couple colds nights slowed down the shad bite dramatically but as the sunshine this afternoon warms up the water the bite will pick right back up. Just reports of hickory shad the last couple days in relatively small numbers – as the temperature increases we will see increased numbers of hickories plus more American shad activity. Perch and striped bass fishing still slow. Catfish fishing improving as temperature rises. Peak shad fishing will be starting this week.
